About Reflections
This section gives you an overview of Reflections services and how we help people with dementia and their families on the Sunshine Coast. It also explains our background and funding and gives an insight into the future directions for our service.
At this time Reflections is the ONLY dementia specific service provider on the Sunshine Coast. With the rising aged population on the Sunshine Coast due to 'baby boomers'and the increase in diagnosis of dementia nationally, Reflections and their auspicing body Alzheimer's Australia Sunshine Coast Inc are planning a major expansion of our service capacity to cater for expected growth.
Current statistics (Access Economics 2007) indicate that over 4000 people with dementia reside on the Sunshine Coast. Approximately 60% of these people continue toreside in the community. Usually people with dementia are living with their families but occasionally they live alone. Right now Reflections assists 120 people with dementia each week (plus their carers). Other service providers also provide care to many people with dementia, however there is still a very large proportion of community who are battling on alone and often under great stress as they deal (on a 24 hr basis) with the daily issues that arise from memory loss or when not able to communicate or correctly complete the tasks of daily living.
Realistically Reflections needs to increase its services but is limited by funding (HACC Funding for service provision) and appropriate venues. We are in the process of developing a ring of small satellite day respite (social club) venues in strategic locations across the Sunshine Coast (Caloundra, Noosa, Nambour, Hinterland) to offer services for more people with dementia that are 'close to home' and relevant to the person's needs. To do this we need government funds and community support.
